Words to Live By
I'm organizing scriptures that really resonate with how I want to live my life, by category, so I can easily find them when I need to be reminded or encouraged...
Engaging with Others
Respect others rules - "And you are sinning against Christ when you sin against other Christians by encouraging them to do something they believe is wrong." 1 Corinthians 9:12
Find common ground with others - "When I am with the Jews, I become one of them so that I can bring them to Christ. When I am with those who follow the Jewish laws, I do the same, even though I am not subject to the law, so that I can bring them to Christ. When I am with the Gentiles who do not have the Jewish law, I fit in with them as much as I can. In this way, I gain their confidence and bring them to Christ. But I do not discard the law of God; I obey the law of Christ. When I am with those who are oppressed, I share their oppression so that I might bring them to Christ. Yes, I try to find common ground with everyone so that I might bring them to Christ. I do all this to spread the Good News, and in doing so I enjoy its blessings." 1 Corinthians 9:20-23
Love Others - "Live a life filled with love for others, following the example of Christ..." Ephesians 5:2
Don't be selfish - "...For a greedy person is really an idolator who worships the things of this world." Ephesians 5:5
Don't gossip - "It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret." Ephesians 5:12
Don't be argumentative - "Don't get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. The Lord's servants much not quarrel but must be kind to everyone. They much be able to teach effectively and be patient with difficult people. The should gently teach those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people's hearts, and they will believe the truth." 2 Timothy 2:23-25
Marriage
"And you husbands must love your wives with the same love Christ showed the church. He gave up his life for her to make her holy and clean...In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man is actually loving himself when he loves his wife...As the Scriptures say, "A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one. This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one. So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband." Ephesians 5: 25-33
Parenting
"And now a word to you fathers. Don't make your children angry by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction approved by the Lord." Ephesians 6:4
