I've been learning a lot about the Montessori philosophy, and am trying to set up the environment accordingly. This picture is of the movement area. We don't have a crib, so whenever he wakes up, he can crawl over and get busy. The bottom shelf has a basket with board books, a wooden rattle, teething ring, interlocking disks, and wooden rabbit on wheels. Things are supposed to be placed on the shelf from left to right in the order they are introduced to the child. This introduces the concept that we work from left to right, such as in reading. On the second and top shelf are things he is still too little for, so they are out of reach. There is a ring stacker, a wooden tractor, a metal tractor and an aloe vera plant.
Along the adjacent wall is a movement mirror. Right now it's just the mirror from our bedroom tipped sideways. I need to look into getting a more child-safe mirror and mounting it on the wall. He is on the verge of crawling now. He likes to roll into the mirror and hit it with his feet and hands; this makes me nervous. Today I saw him on his hands and knees twice. I really need to get moving on baby-proofing.
Above the quilt is a gobbi mobile I made. The co-sleeper in our room also has a mobile above it that we'll move in here once he's sleeping in here. For the baby shower, our niece, Aly made lots of paper cranes. The other mobile has clips to hang whatever you want, so that's what's on it now. it started off with all of her cranes on it. I wanted to add some variety, so now her crane is in the middle, and mine are on the outside.
It's nor purely Montessori, but I'm happy with how it's coming along. For example, their books are just supposed to have simple, real pictures; we read Dr. Suess. The decor is supposed to be really simple, so the quilt is probably a little busy. Sometimes he really enjoys looking at the details of the different fabrics, sometimes he pays no attention, and sometimes it's a little overstimulating. Then we just move to the sleeping area.
Speaking of the sleeping area, we just ordered a bed on Saturday. It should be here in a couple weeks. I'm a little nervous because it's taller than what they recommend. I want to make some sort of wedge for the edge of it so he can roll down gently instead of just falling off. We'll see.
